How to measure Sprockets

Sprockets are sold by tooth count (and chain pitch). Count the teeth on your old sprocket before you order.

Sprockets — count the teeth

Front and rear sprockets are sold by tooth count (and chain pitch such as 520). Counting teeth is the reliable check when you already have the old sprocket in hand — this is not a substitute for bike fitment when you are changing ratios.

Diagram: count sprocket teeth around the circumference
Mark one tooth with chalk, count once around, stop at your mark. Listing “42T” means 42 teeth.
  1. Confirm front or rear Front (countershaft) sprockets are small; rear are large. They are not interchangeable.
  2. Count every tooth Mark one tooth, count all the way around, and write the number (e.g. 14T front / 42T rear).
  3. Match chain pitch Your chain and both sprockets must share the same pitch (420, 428, 520, 525, 530…). Wrong pitch will not mesh.
  4. WhatsApp a photo if unsure Send a clear photo of the old sprocket face plus bike make, model and year to 079 231 2573.
